Pornhub Returns to France: Why is the Content Blurry?

For the past few days, French internet users have noticed a change on Pornhub. The site, which was once the second largest market worldwide after the United States, seems to be back in the country. However, this return is more of an illusion.

Indeed, while access to the homepage is now possible for French IP addresses, the content has been completely transformed. Videos are blurred and attempts to view explicit content lead to login requests that systematically fail. Even worse, the platform has blocked all new registrations for the French region, leaving users with a watered-down version of what it used to be.

The Trigger: The SREN Law and the Obligation to Verify Age

This change is not due to chance, but is the result of a long legal dispute that began in 2025. The Ministry of Culture, relying on the SREN law (law to secure and regulate the digital space), imposed strict age verification measures on several major sites, including Pornhub and RedTube.

The State's Demand: Securing Access

The government's goal is clear: to implement effective technical measures to prevent minors from accessing pornographic content. The law required platforms to prove that users are of legal age before granting them access to sensitive videos.

Aylo's Dilemma: Protecting Minors or Respecting Privacy?

Faced with these obligations, the Canadian publisher Aylo (which oversees Pornhub) chose to confront the issue. The company refused to comply with the new rules, citing a significant argument: the protection of privacy.
